Astro is a powerful robot created by the head of the Ministry of Science, Doctor Tenma (aka Dr. Astor Boyton II in the 1960s English dub) to replace his son Tobio ("Astor" in some translations), who died in a car accident. Dr. Tenma builds Astro in Tobio’s memory and treats him lovingly as if he was his real son. However,


 Dr. Tenma soon realizes that the little android is incapable of human emotions and changes his mind, selling him to a cruel circus owner, Hamegg. Being treated poorly by his owner and other circus people, hobo children, and adults alike, Astro runs away from the circus and eventually finds himself alone in an waste dump with only mice and cockroaches for company.[5]

The series is set in the future (2043 AD), featuring the adventures of a young robot named Atom (“Astro Boy” in the American animated series) created by Umataro Tenma (Dr. Boynton in the American series). Dr. Tenma builds Astro to replace his deceased son Tobio (“Toby”), but he soon realizes that the replica is not the real thing and sells him to a cruel circus owner, Hamegg (Mr. Pompus/Hamegg/Old Bottle/Jeff Bottle).

 Fortunately Professor Ochanomizu (Dr. Elefun/Dr. Packadermus J. Elefun), the new head of the Ministry of Science, sees past his robotic exterior and rescues him – adopting him as his own and becoming his guardian while adjusting to life with his new human family and friends who include Professor Ochanomizu’s niece Uran, who has a crush on Atom and urges him to use his great powers for.
