i think for the most part astro boy captures the wonder of the osamu tezuka classic. granted there is a huge amount of changes from original story to animated series. but, i don't know if it's worth nit picking this movie to death. there are a number of elements that are not exactly 50 or so years ago in their original astro boy comic and cartoon form that have been altered for modern day audiences. in some ways i think astro boy could be considered more "original" than "adaptation," but logic takes a back seat to good old fashioned fun with this one
Astro Boy, known in Japan by its original name Mighty Atom (Japanese: 鉄腕アトム, Hepburn: Tetsuwan Atomu), is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka from 1952 to 1968. The story follows the adventures of an android named Astro Boy and a selection of other characters.[1] The manga was adapted for TV as Astro Boy, the first popular animated Japanese television series that embodied the aesthetic that later became familiar worldwide as anime.[2] After enjoying success abroad, Astro Boy was remade in the 1980s as New Mighty Atom (新・鉄腕アトム, Shin Tetsuwan Atomu), again in 2003, and once again in 2009. In November 2007, he was named Japan’s envoy for overseas safety. An American computer-animated film based on the manga series by Tezuka was released on October 23, 2009. In March 2015, a trailer was released announcing a new animated series.[3][4]
In the future world of Metro City, a brilliant scientist named Tenma builds Astro, a robotic boy with super powers. But Astro is rejected because he fails to behave like a human child and has more power than any one person should have. Heartbroken, Tenma sells him to a cruel circus owner, Hamegg. Astro escapes and learns what it means to be truly alive from a kind family that takes him in. But when Hamegg kidnaps the young son of Tenma's boss and holds him for ransom, Astro must use his powers to rescue the boy - before time runs out!
